I first met Katlyn and Joseph in person when I was all sweaty wearing workout clothes – they happened to be checking in to the hotel a few days before their wedding when I came through the lobby with my flash and folder, checking out the venue. I didn’t expect to run into anyone! They were so gracious and didn’t judge me.

Even though I have been working in the wedding industry for nineteen years (thirteen of those owning my own business) – I still scout every location before a wedding. I may have been to the venue ten times – but have I been there in the rain? In high winds? In that season? At that time of day? On a sunny day when it’s one hundred degrees? In a large venue – have I been there for that specific configuration of rooms or was the cocktail hour elsewhere last time? Did the venue do construction and their lights are now LED’s that are a different color temperature or are more easily caught by the camera shutter? Is an iconic photo location there closed or altered now (trees cut down, fountain off for repair)? Is there a major event in the city closing the road in front of the venue, so we need to leave earlier or allow extra time? Is the couple looking for a specific aesthetic or look or photo I haven’t done there before and want to see how I can execute it? These scouting trips are a big part of my job – I typically spend four to eight hours a week looking at venues!

Kate and Joe are so incredibly intelligent. They have both been through undergrad and grad school and PhD work and post-doc. The schools they went to that were mentioned casually blew my mind – Stanford, Columbia! They are organized and such a great team – I heard Katlyn talking about how it was nice that Joseph also was really involved in the wedding planning so they could share that load/burden of planning. I love that – I knew I could email either one of them and get an answer! Teamwork!

These two had their first date as a double date at a movie theater and a New Orleans themed bar and have been together since 2015. They also have been long distance at times – you have to do what you have to do for your schooling and careers and they made it work cross country with Joe in southern California and Kate in Miami. Pittsburgh was a natural choice for their wedding as Kate is originally from Pittsburgh and Joe from Philly – but they met out in the San Francisco area.

These two became engaged in June of 2021 on Kate’s birthday on Sanibel Island and they got married two years later, planning a gorgeous modern elegant wedding at Hotel Monaco. We embraced the industrial look of the alleyways and rooftop by the venue – I just love the look and contrast of the elegance and the grittier Pittsburgh downtown.

They did a first look on the rooftop and their bridal party were troopers in the heat! We mixed it up with some nice and natural portraits at the Mellon Green Park as well to give variety. The ceremony was held in the Sofia Ballroom with cocktail hour moved from the rooftop to the foyer ballroom area due to a quick storm. But we made it BACK up to the rooftop for the afterparty and these two were so sweet to pose under the string lights for me – I love the glow!

I just loved seeing these two interact and have little hidden moments throughout the day together – they are such a kind, mature, wise and sweet couple and it was truly an honor to be their photographer!

Note to the couple:
